So, too, was the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, who, before 1934, had been recognized as the same breed as the Pembroke Welsh. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi has similar origins in Wales but is most commonly thought to have been developed in the Cardigan region of Wales, hence the name.
To conform with the breed standard, somewhat strangely, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi will often have its tail docked when it is between 2 and 5 days old.
How Popular Are Corgis in the United States?
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was first brought to the United States in the early 20th century, but the AKC first recognized it in 1934.
As a recognized breed, the AKC began tracking both the Pembroke Welsh and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi’s popularity. The Pembroke Welsh would fare better on American shores.
It would also lead to the crossbreeding of the Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgis to create an “American Corgi” – which, among the crossbreeding community, is something of a faux pas within the breed.
Nevertheless, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi remains popular with all kinds of owners. According to the AKC, it was the 11th most popular dog in the country in 2021. Meanwhile, the Cardigan Welsh ranked 67th.
